ABOUT
Veronica Lie
My ambition is to help business leaders that genuinely care about the natural world, fairness and dignity to break away from a broken capitalist model and win in the marketplace.
My strengths lie in strategy development; crafting and winning support for strategic narratives; facilitation/moderation; programme design; complex, multistakeholder project delivery; and business development.
In June 2021, I joined Systems7, an Oslo-based advisory firm that aims to help businesses that matter to the future outperform the ones who don't.
We are inspired by the idea of 'forced transitions' - an oft-repeated phenomenon in which societies and businesses seem to get surprised by major shifts, despite the writing having been on the wall for some time (and in neon lights at that). By combining our strengths – in building leader fluency, identifying strategic step-outs, crafting pivot narratives and evolving leadership capabilities – S7 means to equip leadership teams to avoid forced transitions and transform with intent.
Before joining the team at Systems7, I spent 12 years at an Anglo-Nordic advisory firm driven by its mission of 'reinventing growth'. I played a key role in the company's evolution from a team of around a dozen to its current size of close to a hundred. My role took many forms – from serving as an architect of the company's mission to leading its work on strategy and BD.
As someone who gets a kick out of converting big ideas into commercially viable projects and businesses, I really enjoyed leading the creation and launch of new programmes, such as the Leadership Vanguard (a cross-sector leadership programme for executives from companies like Unilever, Mastercard and Shell) and the Exchange (an annual conference for 500 leaders that has been sponsored by Yara, Nordea, Mastercard, Innovation Norway and the City of Oslo).
But most of my time there was spent working with partner companies, helping their leadership teams identify and take concrete steps towards future-fit growth models, leveraging the firm's toolset in strategy, innovation, leadership and culture change. Highlights include designing and leading 'The Future is Here', an 18-month leadership programme for the management board of DB Schenker. I also developed/led/worked on a range of engagements for companies like Equinor, Yara, TechnipFMC, Aker BP and Statkraft.
Prior to this I was deputy director at London-based NGO the United Nations Association of the UK, where I led the organisation´s policy and advocacy work.
I also write, speak and moderate. I was lead author of 'Choose Growth: shaping Europe´s future now', built out of interviews with nearly 80 European leaders. I have moderated conversations with a range of personalities – from Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales, Verizon's Hans Vestberg and Mastercard's Michael Miebach, to the mayor of Oslo, the former mayors of Toronto and Philadelphia and a robot named Sophia Hanson. And I give speeches – including at the Schenker Forum in Oslo and the Exchange in India.
As a former football player, I thrive working in teams made up of kind, intelligent, funny, challenging, competent people who like getting stuck in. Outside work I am a mother and love climbing and learning new things – I am currently trying to build some proficiency in skiing and mountain biking (which is…humbling!).
