Preparing the next generation of market managers to lead

Starting in early 2023, S7 has been delighted to work with the German organisation's people and culture team in creating a leadership development platform for the next generation of its market managers.

The need

  • Given that the German business is one of the company's key markets, continuous investment in and development of the next generation of market leaders is key.

  • Moving into the market manager represents a shift from managing teams where there is daily contact with each team member to leading distributed and complex teams.

  • Given the above, the people and culture team wanted to give soon-to-be market managers an opportunity to pause, take stock of previous experience, and think about what moves would be required to succeed at the market level before learning and practising new leadership skills.

The approach

  • S7 worked closely with the P&C team to understand the required shift in leadership before designing a nine-month programme consisting of a kick-off; three two-day modules (on self-leadership, team leadership and organisational leadership respectively); and a kick-out.

  • The design maximised interaction and cross-learning among participants, leveraged leading-edge leadership content from across the market, and included a range of voices from within the global organisation.

  • The leadership content was drawn from the company's internal library of development content as well as S7's toolset for leadership development, sustainability and systems thinking.

  • S7 facilitated the programme, ensuring a coherent red thread, engaging participants, preparing guest speakers and delivering tutorials on leadership capabilities.

  • Following the programme, more than half of the participants moved into market manager roles.

  • The second programme will kick-off just after the summer of 2024.
